On Tuesday, January 14, 2020, Rowan Elementary School opened the doors to its newly renovated gymnasium with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for students, faculty and board members.
“We are extremely excited to have our auditorium and gym ready for use,” said Principal of Rowan Elementary, Jaronda Allen. “We’ve been in the renovation stages for about a year and a half, so our kids are very excited to get back in the gym.”
Current Rowan students saw the new gym for the first time during the ceremony and expressed excitement to put it to use.
“I’m so happy to be back in the gym,” said Cameron Taylor, a fifth-grade student at Rowan. “My favorite things to do are playing basketball and dodgeball. I like the new colors and new goals.”
Eric Steele, a member of the Hattiesburg Public School District Board of Trustees, spoke about the drastic improvements to the gym and how it will affect students.
“I was in the last graduating class Rowan, so to see this gym now is fantastic,” said Steele. “The main thing I want students to understand is really what came before them and just appreciate it.”
Among the renovations are new flooring and goals for the basketball court, as well as LED lighting and new windows.
